The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has rejected the salary increments proposed by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), arguing that teachers have been treated unfairly compared to other civil servants.
KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori said the salary harmonisation achieved during the Grand Coalition Government has been reversed, with the pay gap between teachers and comparable public servants now exceeding 60 per cent.
According to the union, teachers received Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) salary increases ranging between KSh 900 and KSh 2,000, while other civil servants benefited from significantly higher adjustments.
KUPPET also criticised the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for failing to safeguard teachers' welfare, citing:
1. Low house allowances.
2. Persistent challenges with the Social Health Authority (SHA), including treatment delays and system failures.
3. Teachers being forced to pay out of pocket for services that should be covered.
4. High costs for specialised treatment, including IVF diagnostics.
The union demanded that TSC provide an alternative medical cover if SHA continues to fail teachers and warned that industrial action remains an option if the concerns are not addressed.
