The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Nandi County Secretary, Captain Paul Rotich, has lauded the government for doubling funding for teacher promotions from Sh1 billion in the last financial year to Sh2 billion in the current financial year.
Speaking to Education News at his office in Kapsabet, Rotich said the increased allocation was a positive step towards addressing teachers' career progression and improving their morale. He, however, urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to increase the number of teachers eligible for promotion to 50,000, saying the increased funding should translate into more opportunities for qualified teachers. "Given that the funding has doubled from Sh1 billion to Sh2 billion, we urge the TSC to increase the number of teachers benefiting from the promotions to 50,000," Rotich said.
Rotich also called on interview panellists to base their questions strictly on the prescribed score sheets to ensure fairness and transparency during recruitment and promotion interviews.
More than 200 teachers from various senior schools in Nandi County are expected to attend the interviews, which will commence on September 16 at Kapsabet Boys High School. Teachers in job groups C4 to D2 will be interviewed at the county level. Rotich said adherence to the prescribed interview guidelines would help ensure that all candidates are assessed fairly and consistently.
He further urged the government and the TSC to sustain efforts to improve teachers' career progression and address staffing challenges in schools. Rotich applauded the government for the massive employment of teachers, saying the move had helped reduce the teacher shortage and made Competency-Based Education (CBE) a reality in junior schools. He said more than 100,000 teachers, translating to 25 per cent of the total teacher population, had been recruited since the Kenya Kwanza government took over in 2022.
