The newly established Kaare Campus of Muraga Technical Training Institute in has opened its doors to young people in Maara Constituency, with 71 trainees already enrolled barely three weeks after its launch.
The campus was commissioned by State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Principal Secretary Dr Esther Thaara Muoria, who said the facility would bring technical training opportunities closer to young people in the area.
The institution, established with support from the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) under the leadership of Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki, began operations in September.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Dr Muoria praised the Kaare community for donating land for the institution, noting that community involvement was key to expanding access to education and skills development.
She also commended Mbiuki for supporting the construction of the campus, saying the focus should now be on ensuring the courses offered address local needs and equip trainees with skills for employment, entrepreneurship and further education.
"The success of this campus will ultimately be measured by the lives it changes and the opportunities it creates," said Dr Muoria.
She challenged the 71 trainees to take advantage of the opportunity by acquiring practical skills, maintaining discipline and using their training to create opportunities for themselves and others.
Muraga Technical Training Institute Principal Ms Purity Murithi said the commissioning marked a significant milestone for both the institution and the local community.
She disclosed that the campus currently offers six courses and urged parents and young people to embrace the facility as an avenue for acquiring practical skills.
"Our call to the community is for them to enrol their children here in large numbers to acquire skills that will help them earn a living in the future," said Ms Murithi.
However, Murithi said the campus was facing a shortage of trainers and equipment, challenges she noted had been raised with the PS.
She added that Mbiuki had pledged to support the construction of workshops through NG-CDF to accommodate an increasing number of trainees as the institution grows.
Mbiuki said the campus was an important milestone in efforts to widen access to quality technical and vocational education within the constituency.
Although still under development, he said the campus had already attracted 71 trainees and was on course to develop into a fully-fledged standalone technical training institute.
The MP said the institution would enable young people to acquire practical skills without having to travel far from their communities while also supporting local economic growth.
Maara MP aspirant Nyaga Kinyua, who attended the commissioning, also welcomed the establishment of the campus, saying TVET institutions play a key role in equipping young people with practical skills for employment and enterprise.
